My first experience with payroll was totalling the hours on timecards. Hours worked were recorded (on paper!) and approved (actually initialed with ink) then brought to my desk to ‘calculate’ the daily regular and overtime hours. That was quite some time ago; payroll systems and I have come a long way since then!
Those first years of learning the payroll processes sparked my interest in the ‘why’ in payroll. I looked to the payroll professionals and enrolled in the CPA certification and earned the CPM designation. Yup, back then the exams were on paper and we waited for results in the mail; as in Canada Post mail! As a Payroll professional, I have worked in a variety of different industries: healthcare, care giver, retail, non-profits, insurance, and construction, both union and non-union environments. Sometimes I think I’ve seen it all….and then I’m surprised by a new challenge!
There was a theme in all of those new challenges – streamline and correct payroll processes! And most times that involved an upgrade or a new system. Throughout my career I’ve been fortunate to have been involved in many successful system upgrades and implementations. Implementing a new system (or two!) is no small task and not for the faint of heart; a successful implementation is the result of a skilled and collaborative team.
I have also experienced taking benefits to market, presenting new benefit options to the Board and successfully rolling out a new benefit plan to the company’s employees! Again, I was fortune to have been surrounded by leaders who fostered collaboration and growth.
